Leave it to George Lucas to mess with the fanboys’ collective mind - by now it must be like shooting fish in a barrel for him. The cheers over the upcoming release of the unaltered Star Wars trilogy on DVD have turned to jeers after more details have surfaced. Basically, Lucas is just taking the versions from the ‘93 laserdisc editions and slapping them on DVD. That means 2-channel audio and non-anamorphic transfers. For someone who is supposedly obsessed with the best video/audio presentation of his movies, this just smacks of spite - an elaborate stick in the eye to the legions who have been clamoring for the originals - “Oh, you want the originals? Here you go.” And then if the sales fall flat, Lucas can claim nobody truly wanted the original versions anyway.
